Summer Reading

Milwee Middle School – Summer Reading Information

Dear Parents of Incoming and Rising Spartans,

Summer is finally here! After a busy and successful school year, we hope your family enjoys a well-deserved season of rest, fun, and relaxation.

While summer is a wonderful time to recharge, research consistently shows that students who stop reading during the summer months may experience learning loss in reading achievement. To help our Spartans continue growing as readers, Milwee is offering a simple and flexible summer reading opportunity.

We are recommending and not requiring that students read and analyze one novel over the summer. Students may select any book of their choice from the 2026-27 Sunshine State Reader books available for checkout at your local library or for purchase at various bookstores.

After completing the novel, students will answer a variety of response questions. They may choose which questions to answer, and each question is assigned a different point value. The total points required will vary for Standard and Advanced students. Please see the links below for detailed assignment information and point requirements.

Students may either type their responses or neatly handwrite them on notebook paper.

We ask that students bring their completed work to their English Language Arts teacher during the first week of school. These assignments will help teachers get to know students as readers and provide opportunities for students to share their reading experiences with classmates. In addition, teachers will offer extra credit to students who complete the summer reading activity.

If you have any questions, please contact the front office.

Have a safe, restful, and enjoyable summer! We look forward to welcoming our new and returning Spartans in August.

Warm regards,

Christen Brundidge, MLMS Assistant Principal (ELA, Reading and ESOL)
